Tailgate may unlatch and open while driving
Misaligned tailgate strikers on certain Ram 1500 pickups can prevent a proper latch and allow the tailgate to open on the road.
What the reviewed source says
Start with the documented condition, not a parts guess.
FCA recalled certain 2019 to 2022 Ram 1500 pickups because one or both tailgate strikers may be misaligned. An improperly latched tailgate can open while the truck is moving and release unsecured cargo into the road. The recall has option-specific exclusions, so the VIN and equipment list matter.

What the official procedure directs
FCA's dealer procedure checks tailgate function and directs adjustment of the tailgate strikers when needed. The procedure does not require replacement parts in the ordinary recall repair.

Recall latch test and striker adjustment
Have a Ram dealer confirm ZB8 by VIN, test the tailgate operation and adjust the striker position as directed by the recall procedure.

Check both latches while parked
With the truck parked and the bed empty, close the tailgate normally and gently pull at each upper corner to see whether either side remains loose. Remove loose cargo and arrange the recall repair if it does not hold securely.
A successful hand check does not prove that an open recall is complete.

These guides explain the safety and evidence checks that apply to this problem file.
Check recalls by VIN
A VIN search checks the displayed NHTSA records for an unrepaired safety recall associated with one vehicle. A model search shows only the wider campaign population.
Read guide ↗When a car is unsafe
A warning light does not always mean the same thing, but weak brakes or smoke leave little room for experimentation. Damaged tires and certain recall instructions can do the same.

“It makes a weird noise” is useful human language. Diagnosis begins when that language is tied to the exact vehicle and its operating conditions.
